Lactation consultations

Our mission is to be the best resource for breastfeeding mothers. One of our lactation consultants will come to you in the comfort of your own home to ease the difficulty of trying to time a feeding with getting your baby out of the house. Our lactation consultants (IBCLC) are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. We are happy to serve the greater Wilmington area and surrounding counties (Home-visits are available within a 15 mile radius - includes Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Ogden, Hampstead, Castle Hayne, and Leland. If you are outside of this area, please give us a call and we will try our best to work with you!)

Our consultant will provide you with information to make informed decisions about your feeding plan, review the basics of breastfeeding, breast assessment and coach your partner on how to best support you. We will begin by going through Mother and Baby’s history, discussing all of your concerns, and weighing your baby before the feeding. Through out the feeding we will assist with latch and positioning and develop a personalized feeding plan to help you meet your goals.

Here is a list of what is typically provided during a Consultation:

  • 1.5-2 hour appointment

  • Full assessment of mother and baby

  • Intake assessment (baby will be weighed pre-feeding on a calibrated baby scale)

  • Observe and assist as needed for an entire feeding

  • Develop a written plan to work towards your personal breastfeeding goals and communication follow-up with all necessary health-care providers

Just like pregnancy, every breastfeeding journey can be completely different. Whether this is your first nursing experience or you've had multiple, don't hesitate to put your mind to rest and give us a call. Here are some examples of when to call a Lactation Consultant:

  • You feel breastfeeding is not going well

  • Sore and/or cracked nipples

  • Difficulty latching

  • Plugged nipple pores

  • Engorged or painful breasts

  • Returning to work

  • Weight checks / Slow weight gain or weight loss

  • You’re unsure baby is getting enough

  • Multiples

  • Any concern mom perceives as a problem

  • Infant supplementation

in-home Baby weigh  appointments

Want to avoid taking your baby into a hospital or Pediatrician's office for a quick weight check during Germ-season?  In addition to our comprehensive lactation consults, we also offer weight-check appointments (also in the comfort of your home). Weight check appointments last for approximately 30 minutes. A Certified Lactation Specialist will do a pre and post-feeding weight on a Calibrated Medela Baby Scale with accuracy to the tenth of a gram! This will give you a definite idea of precisely how much milk volume your baby is transferring from the breast per feeding.  We will also send this information directly to your Health-care provider!

"As a first time mom, Natalie’s lactation services gave me the confidence and knowledge to really embrace breastfeeding. There were times that breastfeeding felt challenging and intimidating — her continued support and availability became a priceless resource. I am so happy and proud that I stuck with it and truly credit it all to the Milky Mermaid’s services!"   - Lauren F.

"I struggled with clogged ducts and mastitis on multiple occasions throughout my breastfeeding journey. Natalie helped me so much by offering support, guidance, and the much-needed encouragement to not give up despite the challenges. I learned how to listen to my body and detect the warning signs before my symptoms worsened and in the end, was able to provide my little boy with breastmilk until he was 18 months old. :)"           - Miranda

Pro tip: Did you know that one of the best ways to gauge how much your baby may be taking in is to look at what comes out? Keep a tally of how many wets and stools your baby has within a 24 hour period. It will be a great reference as we address your concerns and evaluate how your baby is nursing!

Have you ever wondered what really happens during a lactation consultation? Natalie breaks it down and explains what services IBCLC's are able to provide and how they can help!
